YEAR 13 STUDENTS
May was a busy month for the Year 13 Drama and Theatre studies students as on Wednesday 6th May they undertook their practical performance examination. This forms 40% of their final grades and has to be a piece of theatre devised entirely by the students themselves from a stimulus provided by the teacher.
The students created ´Freda and Alice´ which told the story of two sisters, one of whom was dealing with OCD. Carolina and Natalia´s performances were highly emotional and really showed each character’s struggle with the difficulties felt by the OCD sufferer and their family. Yaiza, in her role as Alice´s controlling ´Brain´, demonstrated an excellent knowledge and understanding of physical theatre.
Audience reaction at the end of the show was very positive with many commenting on how moved they had been.
A huge well done to the girls for all their hard work this year in preparing the piece.
YEAR 12 STUDENTS
Year 12 Drama and Theatre Studies students also performed their final examination pieces. In the course, they are required to perform a short monologue or duologue and then a longer group performance. These are worth 60% of the final grade.
On Wednesday 13th May the group performed a series of duologues around 5 minutes long each. Performances included scenes from ´Educating Rita´ and “Blood Brothers”, by Willy Russell, ´A Streetcar named Desire´, by Tennessee Williams and ´Caesar and Cleopatra´, by George Bernard Shaw.
The following Wednesday (20th) was the group performances of 35-45 minutes each. Because of the large number of students, we were required to do two shows. The first was an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s ´Pygmalion´. The second was an adaptation of Jim Cartwright’s play ´Two´ which students had seen earlier in the year at Salon “Varietes”.
The students put on some outstanding performances. Audience members really enjoyed the shows and were amazed by the hidden drama talent that our students have. Well done to all the students!
